Rosacea

?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face. It is manifested by persistent redness, visible blood vessels, breakouts of acne-like pimples and, in some cases, thickening of the skin. Although it can affect anyone, it is most common in fair-skinned adults between the ages of 30 and 50.

Causes

The most common causes are:

• Genetic predisposition
• Alterations in the immune system
• Mite Demodex folliculorum (more common in people with rosacea)
• Hormonal changes
• Reactions to cosmetic products or irritants
• Emotional stress
• Exposure to the sun, extreme heat or cold
• Alcohol, spicy foods or hot drinks

Can it be treated?

Yes! Although there is no definitive cure, rosacea can be effectively treated and controlled. Treatment depends on the type and severity of symptoms, and ranges from the use of topical products and oral antibiotics, to vascular lasers and lifestyle changes. The key is proper diagnosis and follow-up with a health professional.

At Dzeus, you can consult with a specialist from home, get a reliable diagnosis and receive a personalized treatment plan to reduce breakouts, control symptoms and improve the appearance of your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rosacea just “reddening of the face”?

No, rosacea is much more than blushing easily. It is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face—cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin—and can manifest with persistent redness, visible blood vessels, acne-like breakouts, a burning sensation, and even thickening of the skin over time. It can also affect the eyes (eye rosacea).

What causes it?

The exact cause of rosacea is not yet known, but it is thought to result from a combination of genetic, immunological, environmental, and vascular factors. What is known is that it's not contagious nor caused by poor hygiene. In many people, there is an inherited predisposition, and certain triggers can make it worse.

Why does it sometimes get worse without warning?

Rosacea can be triggered by a variety of triggers. Some of the most common are:

  • Exposure to sun or heat
  • Hot or alcoholic drinks
  • Spicy foods
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Hormonal changes
  • Intense physical exercise
  • Irritating cosmetic products

Each person has their own triggers. Identifying them is a key part of treatment.

Is it the same as acne?

Although they may seem similar, they are not the same. Rosacea does not cause blackheads or pimples, and its origin is not related to oily skin or clogged pores. In addition, treatments for common acne may irritate the skin of those with rosacea more. That's why it's so important to get a correct diagnosis.

How do I know if I have rosacea and not something else?

If you notice frequent redness on your face, tenderness, the appearance of small visible veins, or acne-like breakouts with no clear cause, it may be rosacea. However, there are other similar conditions (such as seborrheic dermatitis, cutaneous lupus, or adult acne) that only a specialist can differentiate. In Dzeus Health, our dermatologists can help you confirm the diagnosis.

How should I take care of my skin on a daily basis?

With rosacea, less is more. Opt for:

  • Gentle cleaning, without scrubbing or using abrasive sponges
  • Daily hydration with fragrance-free or alcohol-free products
  • Mineral sunscreen (with zinc or titanium oxide)
  • Avoid hot showers, sudden changes in temperature, and new products without trying first
  • Choose hypoallergenic and oil-free makeup

Our team can help you put together a routine that respects your sensitive skin.
